Businesses compete with one another to see who can do the most good, and then a big mob of consumers buys products in order to reward whichever business made the strongest commitment to improve the world. It’s the opposite of a boycott.</p> <p>It’s easier to understand if you look at an example. In the first ever Carrotmob event, a liquor store agreed to invest in upgrades that made their store more energy-efficient. In exchange, hundreds of Carrotmobbers showed up at once to support the winning liquor store. href="http://www.openvotingconsortium.org/">Open Voting Consortium</a> fundraiser was held Friday at the home of District 10 supervisoral candidate Eric Smith.  OVC’s election reform mission is to maximize reliability and confidence in election results by replacing closed propriety voting systems with non-proprietary paper ballot-generating open source systems.</p> <p>OVC has developed such a system that uses off-the-shelf computer components.  The simplest system would include a computer, a printer and a mouse, but OVC’s system also uses touch screen interfaces.</p> <p>After a voter has completed the ballot selection process, a paper ballot is printed displaying the voter’s ballot selections.  The ballot is also encoded for electronic reading by a barcode reader which would be new temporary span included the removal of an old 3,200-foot segment to make room for the installation of a new 3,600-tonne connecting segment.  The roll in/roll out time-sensitive project, which began Thursday, is scheduled for completion at 5am on Tuesday.</p> <p>But the project, which also included the construction of new toll booths and undertaking road surface maintenance and repairs, ran into a snag Saturday evening when engineers conducting an inspection of the Depression-era bridge, discovered a “significant” crack in one of eight stress-bearing eyebar components used to hold up the eastern span of the bridge.</p> <p>CalTrans spokesperson Bart Ney told reporters today that while all efforts are being made to meet the Tuesday 5am deadline to reopen the bridge, there could be no
